The buildings are mainly built with timber wall structure. But timber trusses are needed to support the long span of the large gym hall, and thicker columns are also needed. For the roof, Cedar cladding is used. For the wall, white-stained plywood panels are cladded to increase the lumosity.

Coogee Bay Community Centre
Aims:
1. to create a threshold between the beach and the dense buildings, private and public space
2. as a centre for the Coogee community
Threshold:
1. transparency between buildings and the beach
2. transformation private and public spaces
Shape:
1. inspired by the pattern of the feature of the site >> one side surround by dense buildings and another side opened to the plain oval beach
2. roof >> two continuous layers intersecting >> meaning beach and the buildings intersecting
2. connecting the grand stand (not stand alone anymore)
3. wave feature of beach (responds to the beach)
4. responds to the coastal line nearby
Transparency:
1. strong (visual) connection to the beach
2. glazing gym hall >> open to the oval side
vertical / horizontal >> movement
perpendicular >> transparent
Materiality:
1. grand stand >> change the facade
2. timber >> related to natural
3. white stained plywood panels >> to increase the luminosity & similar to physical appearance of sand
4. cedar shingles >> will weather in shades and the sculptural volumes of the roof will be enriched and subtly exaggerated
5. property of wave & coastal line >> shown in the shape of the building

Model
East elevation:





A transparency is created facing the oval in the eastern facade. And the cafe is very open for customers coming from all direction.




Ground Level Plan

The toilets - changing room is in a square grid and positioning in the centre, for people coming from different directions. The solid wall for the toilets also maintain a balance between the transparency around.
Level 1 Plan
The small rooms situated in level 2 acted like a skeleton/bones to connect the two big boxes (head and tail) together.
